Musical MFK — 8/29/2012

Wednesday’s back, which means it’s time for MFK!

We’ve all played the “M.F.K” game before — where you take three names and decide which ones you’d marry, which one gets the drawls, and which one gets murdered? Well this is exactly the same, except with music. I give you three songs, and all you have to do is leave a comment below and tell tell me which one you love enough to marry, which one you want to fugg, and which one sleeps with the fishes.

Of course, we’re always looking for reader submissions — so if there’s a track you heard and you kinda like it, or you seriously love it, or you absolutely HATE IT — find a YouTube and email me the link and I’ll post it up here as soon as I can.

Got a few emails from folks this week, including some very interesting artists I hadn’t heard much from before. A little bit of rap, a little bit of soul — all good things to my way of thinking. I’ve also got a few ideas for the upcoming weeks that I think you guys are really gonna love — so keep the submissions and the comments going, because without your help this series just isn’t the same.

And remember — even if you like the songs, you HAVE TO CHOOSE.

Let’s get to it!

Alabama Shakes — “Hold On”

Heata Best ft. B-Simp — “Not Tryna Be Fresh”

(lots of promotional stuff at the start of this vid — the song kicks in at about 1:20)

Slaughterhouse (feat. Skylar Grey) — “Rescue Me”

Hex
Hex is about as wrong as two left feet and there is nothing right about him. Every time we yell at Hex, his rebuttal is always that we are doing so simply because he is Black....yeah..think about that.

  1. Alabama Shakes…didn't Fubs tell us about them? Or someone around here did…

  2. DaGroovy1 says:

    Marry-Slaughterhouse
    Fugg With/Keep as sidepiece-Alabama Shakes
    Sleep wit' da fishes-Heata

  3. NeatoMosquito says:

[M] Alabama Shakes: Not the biggest fan of country music, but let's face it, the focus of the group is the mixed chick with the deep voice. It's OK, I suppose.

[F] Slaughterhouse: What is this? Let's combine rap beats with Evanescence? Doesn't really mesh, but it's better than the Heata Best song.

[K] The Heata Best song: Kill it with fire. Just another hoodrat track talking about stacks of cash in the club, b*****s on the side, and nothing else. Take a beat and repeat it throughout the whole song.

    • It does seem a little restrained compared to his Slaughterhouse's other stuff. Coulda used some Travis Barker helping the beat out, in my opinion.

  4. Damelo Suave says:

None of them are bad per se

M – Alabama Shakes – it caught me by surprise
F – Heata Best – I like the beat a little bit better; I zoned out on both raps
K – Slaughterhouse – just the last man standing

  5. M: Alabama Shakes — “Hold On”: This is actually pretty dope. I think I'll investigate & see if it's worth an album acquisition. Thanks!
F: Slaughterhouse (feat. Skylar Grey) — “Rescue Me”: For a Slaughterhouse track, this is kinda…low-key mellow. I fuggs wit it tho.
K: Heata Best ft. B-Simp — “Not Tryna Be Fresh”: It ain't BAD, per se..but…Nah. Just…nah.

    • I think what ended up sinking the Heata for me was what Mosquito mentioned above. I liked the vibe of the background groove, but the fact that it never ever changed and just ran itself aground was really annoying.

  6. WanderBoi says:

Marry- Alabama Shakes. Marry (and Boff) it because after we met at the juke joint by the river and drank some of that fine moonshine out of the good mason jars, we'd probably boff against some tree instead of waiting to get back home. Once home, more boffing will occur and then a meal of biscuits and gravy will be had. I've been obsessed with this album since Fubs first reviewed it. When I cook on Sundays, I cook to this album.

Boff-Slaughterhouse. I liked the flow of the track. Nice story, good word play. Not overdone.

Kill- Heata Best. He should be called Heata Worst. Just another coon track with a simple vocabulary talking about nothing. Ugh.

  7. M – Alabama Shakes…. A little 4NonBlonds meet the 21st century (and girlfriend sounds too much like Linda
Perry but this be some powr'ful stuff…

F – Slaugherhouse – You can SMELL the Eminem on it

K – whatever the hell that "rap" was
