Wanting to support a video game with a ‘Black’ female lead makes me a racist apparently.

And i’ll totally be that….

Mayhaps I should back this whole story up a little bit in order to provide context to the ran which is about to take place.

The other day a buddy of mine shot an email over to me asking if I had heard of about a new game called: ‘Remember Me’ which is scheduled to come out this summer. Now my friends and I send one another lots of new information about upcoming video games because well.. we are some gaming azz gamers and it’s always good to keep the homies up on awesome new nerdy ish that is coming down the pipeline. Well, the homey:’Mike’ sent me a heads up about this new game and it went something like this:

Mike: Slaus have you heard about that new game coming out called: Remember Me? It kind of looks like Deus Ex cept it features a Black chick as the lead character.

Nilin – Bi-racial lead character of the upcoming: Remember Me.

SlausCaldwell: Waaaaaitammint. There is a damn game coming out with a Black woman as the lead? Seriously? Ohhhhh shit.  It’s an action Role Playing game? Yeah I’m getting that. Not passing up the opportunity to NOT buy an RPG with a black woman as the main character. I pretty much HAVE to buy it.

Mike: Why do you HAVE to. You don’t know if It’s good or bad and you always talk about how you never buy games without knowing if they are good or not.

SlausCaldwell: Man it’s not only a genre I like to play but it has a Black protagonist? Far as i’m concerned I HAVE no real choice. I HAVE to support a game like this to let developers know how much I appreciate the fact that not only is there a woman as the main character but a BLACK woman? Bytch it’s non-negotiable.

Mike: Sounds kind of racist to me.

SlausCaldwell: :: cue the reverse racism whiteboy whining session :: Spare me.

Mike: Just saying. It sounds racist. If I said I was only buying games because they had white males as the lead character, that would be wrong, but you wanting to buy  game just because the lead character is Black is ok?

Rochelle – Left 4 dead 4

SlausCaldwell: Ohhhh Goddddd. What the fuck is it with people and False Equivalence these days. Fuckoutta here with that dumb shyt.  Fuck outta here with that I’m racist shyt also. YOU don’t have to try very hard to find any games featuring a white male lead because that’s 99% of the games on the market. You could go into Gamestop blindfolded, trip and spin around thrice, grab any random game on the shelf and chances are it’s gonna be a white dude saving the world.  ME on the other hand, I have to look high and low to try and find a game that has a Black lead in it THAT ISN”T A DAMN SPORTS GAME. So Tell me this.. How many video games have come out in the last 20 years that featured a Black female lead?

Mike: I don’t know but I’m sure there are more than a few.SlausCaldwell: name ’em. Name me 5.

Mike: Damn Dude. Dramatic much?

SlausCaldwell: Dramadeeznutz. Name me every video game that has been released in the last 20 years.

Mike: That’s ridiculous, Slaus. I can’t possibly name all of that shit.

SlausCaldwell: Right.. you can’t possibly. And out of all those games you can’t name me 5 with a Black female lead? Name me 3? Name me any?

Mike: Rochelle in Left For Dead 2. She is one of the main characters.

Sheva – Resident Evil 5.

SlausCaldwell:  and let’s not forget Sheva from Resident Evil 5, Rochelle from Left 4 dead 2, and Aveline from Assassin’s Creed-Liberation.  Three games…. in 20 years?  But I’m a racist because I want to support developers who actually decide to switch things up a bit an create a game IN A GENRE THAT I PURCHASE LOTS OF GAMES IN… who are actually making a Black woman the lead?    As much as Black women get shit on DAILY in this world, if taking $60 and some time to support the fact that someone wants to give them some shine in a non-stereotypical manner……. if that makes me racist? I’ll be that.

Mike: I never thought of it like that.

SlausCaldwell: it’s cool. You’re still my dude. But You are a white male, homey… that’s the beauty of white privilege ( which is dwindling i might add). You don’t HAVE to see the other side of shyt unless you want to or unless someone legally forces you.  I’m not blaming you… it is what it is. But think about shyt sometimes before you form opinions. Or not… don’t worry.. i’ll be here to help your punk ass along the way. Also… she isn’t BLACK.. she is Bi-racial. Stop with THAT silly shyt. You nor I get to tell a mixed-race person they have to choose XYZ as their race. Shyt is up to them.

I always find it comical that supporting something that others have intentionally or accidentally ignored, somehow makes YOU wrong.   I can sit here on name all of the games with Black lead characters on two hands and still have a finger or two left over. Naming ones which featured a Black female as the main character? I only need one hand.. and i’ll have one finger left over.  Right or wrong, video games feature mostly white male characters saving the universe, cept for those games which offer you the ability to create the look and feel of your own character to control.   The belief is that since mostly white male buy games, they are the ones games should be catered to. Or is it that games are mostly designed BY white males? OR is that, and I have heard this a lot by my white friends whom are authors, that you intentionally stay away from doing Black characters because anything you get ‘wrong’ is always misconstrued as you being a racist.

Aveline – Assassin’s Creed III – Liberation.

” I don’t put many black characters in my stories because I don’t want to get it wrong! I’m not a racist so being called a racist hurts you deeply which is why I and many other authors who are white, stay away from writing Black characters. It’s not worth the stress..’ -Anonymous Author I know.

Valid fear or a cop out? : shrugs:: not for me to say. But what I WILL say is that it’s nice to see that there are still some writers, developers etc., who simply write the stories they want to write without making a big deal about the racial world the character exists in and are willing to do something different.

Here is what the developers of the game had to say when they were asked about having a game without a lead white male character…

Some of the most popular and best selling games feature white males as protagonists, but fitting that mold is not a requirement for success, according to Remember Me developer Dontnod cofounder Jean-Maxime Moris. He told CVG in a new interview that the developer never faced any pressure from publisher Capcom to change its lead characters’ appearance. Remember Me’s protagonist is a mixed-race female character named Nilin.

“No, we wanted Nilin to stand out. I think these sort of issues become self-fulfilling prophesies; people saying that only white males sell so then everyone only does white males,” Moris said. “If you start believing these things you get your head inside this cold marketing strategy that you cannot get your head around. It becomes a pretty f**king racist and misogynistic way of thinking about lead characters.”

Remember Me (formerly Adrift) is a third-person game due out in May 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Despite the game not shipping until next year, Capcom is already planning to spin the game into a “major franchise” and is even eyeing next-generation consoles for future installments. [source]

Much props to the developers of Remember me for taking this step.

…..but if that heffa’s power-up is a watermelon slice, bytch i’ll kill you.
